Who can garden without herbs? They flavor our foods, draw pollinators, repel pests, provide scent, and mix merrily in both ornamental and edible beds. Summit County Master Gardener Nancy Quinn-Simon will take us back in history for a look at some of the herbs used in Shakespeare’s day: their history, how to incorporate them into your garden design, how to care for and use them. There are reasons these herbs were popular in the Elizabethan era – learn why and how to feature them in your own garden beds.

In 1981 elementary school teachers Nancy Quinn and Ed Simon decided to transition some of the strawberry and corn fields on their farm into herb gardens. They opened a greenhouse to sell herbs, host workshops and teach classes (in their spare time!) and there began Nancy’s lifelong love affair with herbs. Nancy authored the Herbal Weaving Handbook and has enjoyed learning and sharing her knowledge through her memberships with the Herb Society of America, International Herb Association, Garden Club of Ohio, Heritage Herb Society, and the Canton Garden Center. She is currently the Herb Chairman of the Garden Club of Ohio.

BUG AND BOTANICAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY: DISCOVER THE WONDER OF YOUR GARDEN

Wednesday, September 1, 6:30 pm.

Photography is a wonderful way to capture the beauty of our gardens while showcasing the diversity of creatures that dwell among the blooms. Digital marketing manager for The Nature Conservancy in Ohio, Danae Wolfe, will share tips and techniques for capturing portraits of insects and the plants that support them. Her focus will include both traditional photography methods as well as macro setups that offer high magnification at a low cost. Be prepared to see your garden from a bug’s eye view!

Danae Wolfe is a writer, photographer, and engagement specialist with 12 years’ experience crafting compelling narratives that connect people with nature. She started her career working for the National Park Service as an interpretive park ranger where she developed outreach programs on water quality and invasive species. For the last 9 years, she has worked for Ohio State University Extension as a county educator focused on teaching sustainable horticulture programs and most recently as a digital engagement specialist teaching faculty and staff how to design more impactful educational programs for face-to-face and online audiences. Throughout this time, she has built a community initiative, Chasing Bugs, to teach people about the importance of protecting our six-legged neighbors – insects. Through her website, social media, public speaking, and column in The American Gardener magazine, Danae has reached global audiences with science-based education about the importance of conservation. She recently began the next chapter of her career as a digital marketing manager for the The Nature Conservancy in Ohio.

INSIDE THE HIVE: A Closeup Look at the Honeybee’s Home

Wednesday, April 21, 6:30 p.m.

What’s going on inside the beehive?! As the County Bee Inspector, Randy Katz has many questions. Is there a nice quantity of healthy bees? Are there mites and other diseases? Any signs of a potential swarm? How healthy is the queen – is she marked? Are there enough brood (egg) cells at various stages of growth? Is there sufficient food available to raise the larvae? So many questions with so little time – tune in to this presentation to see the answers as Randy takes us along for a beehive inspection.

Recently retired, Randy co-owned and operated City Scrap & Salvage Co. for 30 years. He graduated from Leadership Akron and now co-chairs Environment Day for Junior Leadership Akron. Randy sits on the board of the Summit County Master Gardeners and is vice president of the Summit County Beekeepers Association. He serves as the Summit County Bee Inspector, and currently has 8 beehives, 26 chickens, 20 dogs, 2 cats, along with a garden of dreams!

NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S CONTAINER

Wednesday, May 5, 6:30 p.m.

We all know how to put the usual suspects into a pot and call it a container. Spike, geranium and petunia – check them off the thriller, filler and spiller columns. Let’s think beyond those usual plants and consider adding some spice to the mixture. Diane Fort designs gardens and pots for local gardens and will show us how to put a unique container combination together, and how to make it long lasting and visually exciting.

A note from Diane: I would like to introduce myself to all of you wonderful gardeners. My name is Diane Fort, and my passion is, of course, creating flower and garden containers. I am a self-taught gardener, with a long history of gardening. In the ‘80s I ventured on my own with my store called “The Secret Garden” and worked with both live and faux arrangements. I have worked for both Donzell’s and Suncrest Gardens spanning 25 years. Now that I have retired from 30 years of greenhouse employment, I love having the free time to browse for lovely plants and create containers. And, as we all know, learning is never ending! I’m looking forward to our workshop in May. ‘Til then, think spring!!!

HOW TO GROW TERRIFIC TOMATOES  Wednesday, June 2, 6:30 p.m.

What is the most popular vegetable in US gardens? The tomato, of course. Navigating your way through the different selections, determining the best planting techniques, and dealing with the pests and diseases that may come your way can be challenging. Lee Paulson, Summit County Master Gardener and “Mr. Tomato”, will share his time hewn wisdom and advice for growing the tastiest and most prolific tomatoes. Join us for his Terrific Tomatoes program and be on your way to tomato success.

Believe it or not, Lee has many varied horticultural interests besides growing tomatoes. Topping his list is growing dahlias. This is followed by tropical plants, annuals, roses, beneficial insects, photography, heirloom vegetables, seed starting and cannas. He has served as the chair of the Summit County Master Gardener Speakers Bureau for the past half dozen years.

Making Kokedama!

This program will be offered via Zoom.

This program is FREE, but registration is required.

KOKEDAMA: DEMONSTRATING A JAPANESE ART FORM Wednesday, March 3, 6:30 p.m.

Kokedama is Japanese for “moss ball”, which aptly describes this centuries old Japanese tradition. While Kokedama began as a means of highlighting the exposed root system of a bonsai specimen, it has evolved to be an elegant plant potted up in a spherical shape and then covered in moss. Summit County Master Gardener Heidi Schwarzinger will describe this art form and its variations and show us how to create one.

Heidi Schwarzinger is a master “crafter” as well as a Summit County Master Gardener. She acquired a love of all things green at a young age from watching her “oma” tending her extensive vegetable garden. Heidi, whose B.A. is in Interior Design, has worked in the design and wall coverings industries. She enjoys dabbling in and teaching many crafts, and has taught jewelry making and “bling-a-lings” (bedazzling handbags, sunglasses, shoes, etc.). She especially enjoys combining her design skills and horticulture knowledge in classes such as “Get Dirty” container gardening sessions and Kokedama.

UTILIZING NATIVE PRAIRIE PLANTS IN THE HOME LANDSCAPE

This program is FREE VIA ZOOM, but registration is required.

Wednesday, February 17, 6:30 p.m.

We all understand that native plants are critical to the life cycle of pollinators and are essential to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. But how can the average homeowner effectively incorporate them into an existing landscape? Kevin O’Brien, Landscape Designer, has done just that and will share how he has been transforming his award-winning home landscape into a garden that is rich in species diversity and life. Kevin will challenge our thinking about how we look at our gardens and landscapes and inspire us to begin our own journey with the beauty and functionality of native plants.

Kevin O’Brien designs and creates landscapes across northern Ohio. He has been practicing landscape design for more than 20 years at Lifestyle Landscaping, Inc. His built projects have received awards at both the state and national levels and have been featured in garden books, industry publications and local magazines.
